LEGISLATING COMPASSION
In a church I once served there was an individual who spent a great deal of time attending to others’ business.  This individual was worried about what other people gave in the offering and what other people were doing or not doing to serve the church or others.

While Jesus advocated that we have compassion one toward another he never advocated legislating it.   The reason being is that legislated giving is born of obligation or law and never from the heart.  Therefore it is not compassion.

As Christians we have to be careful about dictating to others; whether by word, whether by empowering government, or whether by coercive agency.

It is not our right to force others to give or do.

That is something we should reserve for ourselves.

2 Corinthians 9:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, [so let him give]; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
