This verse is unfortunately often used to mean “abandon your understanding.” In order to acknowledge the Lord and follow His direction, we must use our understanding. If we don’t use our own understanding of what God said, we end up using somebody else’s understanding of what God said — it is still a human understanding that we depend on, because we are human.

The verse does not, though, say “Do not use your understanding.” It says, do not *lean* on your understanding.” We must not not rely exclusively on our *own* understanding of “what God said,” as if our understanding is unquestioningly perfect and authoritative. Walk humbly, knowing that any human understanding of God’s word is incomplete and fallible. Then we can always increase in understanding.

Studying together with people who do not always agree with us is a good way to find our errors and blind spots, and not “lean unto our own understanding.”
