Daily Devotional – August 18

2 Peter 1: 5-7 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; and to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; and to godliness brotherly kindness;

Kindness is often viewed as a weakness in this society instead of acknowledging of the often super-human strength it takes to wield it.  It seems that the things we teach our kids anymore are

  • how to be assertive
  • fight for your rights
  • don’t take anything from anybody
  • get ahead of others

but rarely…kindness.

The more spiritually mature we become, the more kindness  will be exhibited in our life.

Ephesians 4:32(a) And be ye kind one to another.

  1. I missed you, Jack. No details are necessary for you to find your way into my prayers. It seems the kindness spoken of here (following godliness) requires discernment. This verse leads me to believe we must speak out not so much for our own rights but for the rights of others. This is why I speak for minority rights. Kindness (after godliness) insists that I put myself where another stands. I have to use empathy to be kind (since I am not omnicient). Trouble is society (especially in polititical or religious circles)immediately screams “blleding liberal” like it’s a childhood disease (or worse yet, immoral) to treat homosexuals or convicted felons like people. How else can we love them to Jesus? To this end, I do not worry about being misunderstood. Why are we so afraid? Aren’t God’s promises enough?
